We were sold out!

Generally those words strike fear in the hearts of men and women.  But for us, as Hawthorn Innkeepers, it’s a thrill!  This past weekend we had sixteen overnight guests each night.  Some were here for the KC Royals Home Opener games, some for a wedding, a ladies get-together and the others were here just for a leisurely weekend.   No matter what the occasion, it’s always great for Hawthorn to be sold out!

We serve our guests breakfast on the sun porch, in the dining room or parlor.  We even serve our guest’s guests!  It’s not uncommon for our out-of-town guests to ask us if they can invite local family or friends to join them for one of Jim’s incredibly delicious breakfasts.  Just let us know when you’re making your reservation with us and we’ll help you plan an extra special breakfast gathering for your Hawthorn weekend!

Hawthorn, A Bed & Breakfast, has six guest rooms, all with private baths.  Of those six, two are two-room suites, meaning they can accommodate four guests each overnight. Some of our guests book the whole house to accommodate their entire family for special events and family reunions.

Hawthorn is also a great home base for everyone traveling to the area whether it’s for an event at one of the Independence sites -- Truman Library, Community of Christ International Headquarters, the Mormon Center, Independence Event Center, KC Royals and Chiefs Stadiums, or at one of the great Kansas City venues -- the Sprint Center, Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, Music Hall, Power & Light District, Crown Center, University of Missouri, Nelson-Atkins Museum, and the Country Club Plaza; we’re only minutes away from your KC entertainment destination.

Call us directly at 816-252-2607 or contact us via this website, http://www.hawthornbb.com/index.htm, to help plan your stay in the area.  If you use another website to reserve your overnight accommodations, you’ll miss out on all the personal attention we give our guests! We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Royals' Opening Day

Friday, April 13th, is the Kansas City Royals’ Home Opener game against the Cleveland Indians.   As season ticket holders, we’re looking forward to all the pre-game festivities.  In spite of our team’s recent history, there is a sense of anticipation and renewed enthusiasm for our Boys of Summer.  It’s a new season with some new talent and generally high hopes.

As you enter Kauffman Stadium, you see that the celebrating starts in the parking lot...before the first pitch is ever thrown.  Tailgating sets the mood for the day.  Everyone is jovial and willing to include baseball fans of all shapes, sizes and allegiances in their pre-game customs.  Once you’re inside the stadium, the familiar sounds and smells remind you why this annual ritual is repeated in ball parks all over America.  The stands become the backdrop of a summer theatre creating comedy, drama and intrigue for all who participate.  With new merchandise in the shops, new menu items to experience and, of course, the old standards - cold beer, peanuts and popcorn, there’s something for every person attending!

Following the obligatory welcome and introductions, the sold-out crowd gets on their feet with hands to heart to sing the Star Spangled Banner and then -- the most thrilling part of the day -- the fly-over by the amazing US Air Force and their awesome planes from Whiteman Air Force Base, Knob Noster, Missouri.

Opening Day at the ballpark…it just doesn’t get any better than this…although a win would certainly boost our happy factor and just possibly increase our team loyalty!

When you’re coming to the Kansas City area for a Royals’ baseball game or just a leisurely weekend in historic Independence, Missouri, overnight accommodations will affect your happy factor, too!  Call us now for your advance reservations; we’d love to share Hawthorn, A Bed & Breakfast, with you!

Family calendars and the incredible speed of life…

Everyone we know has a family calendar.  You know, it has everybody’s schedule on it.  Some are electronic, carried around in a special little case; others are giant binders with indexes of deadlines, appointments, school activities and special family events.  Then there is Hawthorn’s calendar.

Our calendar is different than any other planner you’ve ever seen!  We chronicle only momentous life events; weddings, receptions, showers, luncheons, dinner parties, holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, family reunions, weekend get-aways and vacations for those seeking refuge from their own hectic schedules.

If you’re looking for a venue that will make your special event even more memorable for you and your guests, Hawthorn, A Bed & Breakfast, in historic Independence, Missouri, is available for small groups as well as garden events for up to 250 guests.

When your plans include a trip to the Kansas City area for Royals’ or Chiefs’ games, concerts, special events at the Sprint Center or the new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, we’re located only minutes away with easy access to I-70.

While our calendar is as busy as yours, we can always accommodate another extraordinary celebration and we look forward to hearing from you to schedule yours!

Summers at Hawthorn

Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast, has seen 111 summers.  In the 1900’s, John Gallagher, the original owner of Hawthorn, and his family spent their summers in what was then “the country.”  As soon as school was dismissed in Kansas City in June, John and his family traveled the twelve miles to Hawthorn, their beautiful country home in Independence, Missouri.

Times haven’t really changed that much.  It’s June!  Summer is here and our bed and breakfast guests have lots of opportunities for summer activities!  Whether it’s an evening baseball game at the Kansas City Royals’ Kauffman Stadium, a major musical production at Starlight Theater, or the latest exhibit at Union Station, they look forward to summer events.  Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast, is so conveniently located that an outing to any of Kansas City’s premier venues is only minutes away!

For Civil War enthusiasts, The Truman Library and Museum is now hosting the exhibit “Steamboats to Steam Engines: George Caleb Bingham’s Missouri, 1819-1879” and his famous painting “Order No. 11” in acknowledgment of the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War.  The Library and Bingham-Waggoner Estate are located a short distance from Hawthorn and are popular Independence visitor destinations.

Lake Jacomo, the area’s 970-acre lake is just a half-an-hour east of Hawthorn in Fleming Park.  It’s one of the County’s most popular recreational areas.  Visitors can enjoy colorful sailboat regattas, while pontoon boaters take leisurely cruises across the lake!  Fishing, swimming or windsurfing… whatever your pleasure, Lake Jacomo affords a relaxing outing for water fans.

Spend a summer weekend at Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast, in Independence, Missouri.  It’s a great way to celebrate the season!

Kansas City Royals baseball game with our Grandkids

We have season tickets for the Kansas City Royals MLB team so we took our grandkids with us on Sunday.  It’s hard to tell who had more fun…the kids watching the game and all the activities or Jim and I watching the kids.  What a great tradition to share with family…Sunday afternoon at the ball park!

If you’re planning a trip to Kauffman Stadium to attend a Kansas City Royals baseball game, why not choose Hawthorn, A Bed & Breakfast, for your overnight lodging.  Our large guestrooms feature private baths, cable tv, WiFi and queen-sized beds.  The newly remodeled Bibler Suite can accommodate four guests with a king-sized bed in the bedroom and daybed and futon in the living room.  Enjoy Jim’s hearty breakfast of fruit sundaes, omelets, sausage, potatoes and raspberry muffins before heading to the ball park.

We’re putting the Royals’April and May home game dates on our calendars!  Here they are for you, too.  Maybe we’ll see you there!

April 18-21  Cleveland Indians
April 29-May 1  Minnesota Twins
May 3-5  Baltimore Orioles
May 6-8  Oakland Athletics
May 16-17  Cleveland Indians

Hawthorn Bed and Breakfast, Independence MO

Welcome to our first blog from Hawthorn, a Bed and Breakfast in Independence, MO.   In March 2010 we attended the annual Professional Association of Innkeepers International conference in Austin, Texas.  It was a great opportunity to meet other innkeepers from around the country and learn about the latest tips and trends in the industry.  Apparently, we are still living a little too much in the lifestyle of Harry Truman when it comes to computer technology and social networking!  We’ve heard about blogs, Facebook and Twitter but have not ventured into that world until now.

It was just 4 years ago that we first visited Hawthorn with the intention of making an offer and buying the bed and breakfast.  By dinner that evening, we had reached agreement with innkeepers, Fred and Pat Bibler and were looking forward to becoming innkeepers ourselves.  Hawthorn is now in the 10th year of operation as a bed and breakfast, the mansion and estate continuing the tradition of being shared with others.

It has been a longer winter than in the recent past but we’re starting to see signs of spring.  The daffodils and tulips are up and the grass is green.  We will be planting the first round of flowers in the next few weeks – Wendy’s favorites – pansies.  Last summer was spectacular weather for our outside weddings and we can’t wait to celebrate with this year’s brides and grooms.  If you are planning a summer wedding and haven’t chosen a venue, we’d love to have you schedule some time for your personal tour of Hawthorn.  Our website has photos and details with our policies and pricing.

Check our website for Kansas City Royals major league baseball game packages. We are conveniently located just 10 minutes from Kaufmann Stadium.

If history is more your game, spend some time touring the Independence historical sites, including the Truman Library and Museum, Harry Truman’s home, the Bingham-Wagonner Estate, Vaile Mansion, Frontier Trails Museum to name just a few.

There’s something for everyone in the Independence/Kansas City area.  Shopping at Country Club Plaza or Zona Rosa is just 15 minutes away.  Steamboat Arabia and City Market are wonderful venues for the family and the nightlife and dining of the Power and Light District awaits as the sun goes down.

Thanks for clicking on our site.  Be part of our 10th year anniversary celebration.  Join us for a weekend getaway or start your life together with your wedding at Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast.
