Weekends at Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast

We had friends over for dinner last night.  We’ve known them since 2006 when we purchased Hawthorn from them.  Most Sunday nights we can all be found either on the sun porch or in the dining room around the big table.  We eat great food, enjoy a good wine with dinner, play cards, laugh and chat about everything.  It makes for a relaxing Sunday evening for everyone to get ready for the coming busy work week.

This weekend we were fortunate enough to have shared the space with a lovely couple from Joplin, Missouri.  It is their third stay at Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast.  They come to the Kansas City area every year for a marathon shopping weekend.  This year they brought another couple with them to share in their annual trek.  Once they checked in and were settled in their rooms, they came downstairs and set up the game board at the dining room table.  We poured the coffee, Jim treated them to freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, and they played and chatted all evening.  Like us, they had a wonderful relaxing Sunday night.  We’re already looking forward to their next visit.

Our guest rooms are large and comfortable with elegant furnishings, but our guests enjoy all the common areas as much as their own rooms.  Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast is more than just overnight lodging; it’s an experience!

Located just minutes from I-70, Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast in Independence, Missouri, offers the convenience of being within a short driving distance to The Country Club Plaza, Westport, the Power and Light District, Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s Outfitters and The Legends at Village West.  Given that, there’s no limit to what the adept shopper can accomplish in one weekend!

History repeated...

Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast opened its doors to guests in 2000.  How fortunate we are to have been so well received by the community.  Through the years, our B and B and event guests have been very supportive by continually choosing Hawthorn for lodging and special event needs

As a result of your wonderful encouragement, in early 2010, Wendy and I began discussing the need for expansion.  In order to accommodate requests for events serving greater numbers of guests attending weddings, dinners and other important events, we committed our time, energy and resources to accomplishing that growth within the year.

A photograph of Hawthorn taken in the early 1900’s shows that there was originally a west wing on the mansion and written history tells us the wing included the caretaker’s quarters, a large pantry, and laundry room and additional storage space.  Inspired by the original “footprint,” our ideas turned into sketches and then sketches turned into architect’s renderings.

In August 2010, construction began on the new west wing of the mansion.  The 2010 design creates a similar plan as the 1900’s, but with all the latest modern conveniences and updates.  We are anxious to share the growth and changes at Hawthorn with all our guests and will soon announce the dates for our re-dedication.

If you’re out our way in Independence, Missouri, book a room, enjoy one of our wonderful hearty breakfasts and see history repeat itself in the form of our newly expanded version of Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast.

Creating Valentine's Day Memories

One day a year we focus on celebrating love and relationships.  We assign special meaning to hearts, flowers and chocolate.  A popular custom is for couples to reserve a table at a nice restaurant, enjoy an outstanding dinner, share a bottle of wine and then retire to a romantic bed and breakfast for some special together-time.

Our well-appointed guest rooms, designed to make your stay an experience, are elegant and comfortable.  The history, architecture and ambiance of Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast, complete the evening in the refined sophistication of our 110 year-old mansion.
