Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast, can boast of a number of dramatic architectural and artistic designs preserved since the 1900’s. But the mansion’s most beloved art was added in the 1940’s by a friend of the lady of the manor in the form of two murals on the wall of the drawing room.
Each mural depicts a tranquil scene of an elegant and attractive 1800’s couple enjoying the music of the day on the lute and clarinet. Bringing art and music appreciation into one room helped to redefine the beautiful space. With the family piano situated in a corner, the inviting warmth of the fireplace and the addition of the newly hand-painted murals on each side of the window, all merged to create a “harmonious experience” giving the drawing room its new designation, the “Music Room.”
Wendy and I have always been huge fans of music. Our two children were active in symphony band and orchestra while at City High School in Iowa City, Iowa. As parents we became their “groupies” and chaperoned the orchestra on a wonderful European trip in the summer of 1998.
During your stay here at Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast, we invite you to enjoy all the common areas of the mansion… the Sun Porch, the Parlor and Dining Room, but most especially, relax and unwind in the Music Room.
