Missouri's Holiday Season Traditions

If you ask a Kansas Citian, “What is your most enduring memory of the holiday season in Kansas City, Missouri?” they will almost always say, “Holiday Shopping at the Country Club Plaza” and “The Plaza Lights!”

The annual Plaza Lighting Ceremony on Thanksgiving Night is the official start to Kansas City, Missouri’s holiday season. The tradition began in 1930 as sixteen lights hung over a doorway.  Now it includes 280,000 multi-colored bulbs outlining the buildings and towers of Kansas City’s famous Country Club Plaza.  The impressive display of lights remains on until January 16, 2011.

When making your travel plans and lodging arrangements for shopping and touring the “Plaza,” keep in mind that Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast, is only eleven miles from and less than fifteen minutes to the famous Kansas City Country Club Plaza.  Your stay at Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast, in historical Independence, Missouri, will create one of your most enduring holiday memories!

"It's beginning to look a lot like..."

The holiday season at Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast, began early in November.  That was when we started decorating nineteen Christmas trees and placing six complete “Department 56 New England Villages” throughout the mansion.  Our cherished collection includes the “Seaside Village, Maple Sugaring Time, Main Street and On the Farm,” all reminiscent of our childhood days in Vermont and New Hampshire.

The transformation continued through the month to reveal that of a magnificent winter wonderland. The sparkle and shimmer of hundreds of lights create the magic of the season for everyone attending a holiday event at Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast.

Hawthorn is the perfect setting for you and your special friends to enjoy this season's unique experiences. The beautiful holiday decorations and spectacular cuisine make every event a memorable occasion.

We look forward now to hosting several holiday events including office parties, family gatherings and reunions, ladies’ luncheons and elegant dinner parties. There are still a few dates open on the Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast, holiday calendar, so call now to reserve a date for your holiday party or special occasion!
