We’re proud of our place in history here in Independence, Missouri! We can lay claim to several important events in the growth and development of the USA. In the 1800’s, Independence was the original point of departure of the California, Oregon and Santa Fe Trails; Lewis and Clark recorded in their journals that they stopped here in 1804 to pick plums, raspberries, and wild apples. Our city played a pivotal role in the early history of the Latter Day Saint movement and two important battles occurred here during the Civil War. Harry S Truman, thirty-third President of the United States, grew up in Independence and it is the site of his Presidential Museum and Library. For us, every day is Independence Day!
There is, of course, a special observance here on July 4th of each year and we’re all looking forward to the eighth annual Independence Day Celebration. It will be an evening of great music and spectacular fireworks. The celebration is a gift from the City and their partners, the Mormon Visitors Center and the Truman Presidential Museum and Library. The Spirit of Independence Band will begin their performance at 8:30 p.m. and play throughout the evening and the fireworks display will start around 9:30 p.m. We’re encouraging our Hawthorn Bed and Breakfast guests to get there early to get good seats on the lawn at the Mormon Visitors Center.
If you’re planning on celebrating Independence Day in Independence, Missouri, please visit our website at www.hawthornbb.com to see our own piece of history, elegant and gracious Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast.

Summers at Hawthorn
Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast, has seen 111 summers. In the 1900’s, John Gallagher, the original owner of Hawthorn, and his family spent their summers in what was then “the country.” As soon as school was dismissed in Kansas City in June, John and his family traveled the twelve miles to Hawthorn, their beautiful country home in Independence, Missouri.
Times haven’t really changed that much. It’s June! Summer is here and our bed and breakfast guests have lots of opportunities for summer activities! Whether it’s an evening baseball game at the Kansas City Royals’ Kauffman Stadium, a major musical production at Starlight Theater, or the latest exhibit at Union Station, they look forward to summer events. Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast, is so conveniently located that an outing to any of Kansas City’s premier venues is only minutes away!
For Civil War enthusiasts, The Truman Library and Museum is now hosting the exhibit “Steamboats to Steam Engines: George Caleb Bingham’s Missouri, 1819-1879” and his famous painting “Order No. 11” in acknowledgment of the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War. The Library and Bingham-Waggoner Estate are located a short distance from Hawthorn and are popular Independence visitor destinations.
Lake Jacomo, the area’s 970-acre lake is just a half-an-hour east of Hawthorn in Fleming Park. It’s one of the County’s most popular recreational areas. Visitors can enjoy colorful sailboat regattas, while pontoon boaters take leisurely cruises across the lake! Fishing, swimming or windsurfing… whatever your pleasure, Lake Jacomo affords a relaxing outing for water fans.
Spend a summer weekend at Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast, in Independence, Missouri. It’s a great way to celebrate the season!

What's in a name?
We are pleased to have completed the construction of our new 2,400 square foot addition to Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast. The expansion includes a huge gourmet kitchen, owner’s two-bedroom apartment and three-car garage. In creating our new living space, we were able to transform what used to be our owner’s quarters into an additional guest suite.
Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast, was created and developed by Fred and Pat Bibler in 2000. In naming each guest room, they used the previous owners’ names to create an ongoing record of those families who were the history and life of the mansion. As it was for us, the Bibler's living quarters were on the third floor in what was originally the “servant’s quarters.” Following in the tradition started by the Biblers, when we completed redecorating the area we re-named it the “Bibler Suite.”
Using Norman Rockwell illustrations as our inspiration, the Suite décor and ambiance are suggestive of a simpler time in American history. Comfort and convenience are of importance, as well, with a king-sized bed in the bedroom, private bath and the small “kitchenette” with refrigerator, microwave, sink and dining area. The Bibler Suite accommodates up to four overnight guests utilizing a daybed and fold-out futon in the living room. We’re very excited to be able to offer yet another option for our bed and breakfast guests with the Bibler Suite and look forward to sharing all of Hawthorn with you when you come to the Kansas City and Independence, Missouri area.

Kansas City Royals baseball game with our Grandkids
We have season tickets for the Kansas City Royals MLB team so we took our grandkids with us on Sunday. It’s hard to tell who had more fun…the kids watching the game and all the activities or Jim and I watching the kids. What a great tradition to share with family…Sunday afternoon at the ball park!
If you’re planning a trip to Kauffman Stadium to attend a Kansas City Royals baseball game, why not choose Hawthorn, A Bed & Breakfast, for your overnight lodging. Our large guestrooms feature private baths, cable tv, WiFi and queen-sized beds. The newly remodeled Bibler Suite can accommodate four guests with a king-sized bed in the bedroom and daybed and futon in the living room. Enjoy Jim’s hearty breakfast of fruit sundaes, omelets, sausage, potatoes and raspberry muffins before heading to the ball park.
We’re putting the Royals’April and May home game dates on our calendars! Here they are for you, too. Maybe we’ll see you there!
April 18-21 Cleveland Indians
April 29-May 1 Minnesota Twins
May 3-5 Baltimore Orioles
May 6-8 Oakland Athletics
May 16-17 Cleveland Indians
May 18-19 Texas Rangers
May 20-22 St. Louis Cardinals
May 30-June 1 LA Angels

Artist Unknown...but one of our favorites!
Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast, can boast of a number of dramatic architectural and artistic designs preserved since the 1900’s. But the mansion’s most beloved art was added in the 1940’s by a friend of the lady of the manor in the form of two murals on the wall of the drawing room.
Each mural depicts a tranquil scene of an elegant and attractive 1800’s couple enjoying the music of the day on the lute and clarinet. Bringing art and music appreciation into one room helped to redefine the beautiful space. With the family piano situated in a corner, the inviting warmth of the fireplace and the addition of the newly hand-painted murals on each side of the window, all merged to create a “harmonious experience” giving the drawing room its new designation, the “Music Room.”
Wendy and I have always been huge fans of music. Our two children were active in symphony band and orchestra while at City High School in Iowa City, Iowa. As parents we became their “groupies” and chaperoned the orchestra on a wonderful European trip in the summer of 1998.
During your stay here at Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast, we invite you to enjoy all the common areas of the mansion… the Sun Porch, the Parlor and Dining Room, but most especially, relax and unwind in the Music Room.

The Gardens at Hawthorn
One of the bonuses of spring cleaning in the gardens at Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast, is discovering that last year’s planting investments are yielding record returns this year. The appearance of tiny buds, new growth and green shoots peeking through the soil promises us an abundance of color throughout spring and summer.
Our gardens are an essential part of the Hawthorn experience. A stroll around the estate in early spring presents many opportunities to celebrate the season. If you’re planning a wedding, reception, family reunion or other garden event, please consider Hawthorn, A Bed and Breakfast, and our picturesque two acre estate.
